Photographic Manipulation

Photographic manipulation is a term used to describe the process of altering images using both analogical and digital means. But, can we abandon our own eye for design to rely on auto-features and presets in software packages to do the job for us? Does manipulation evoke a negative and false portrayal of role-models to teenagers and young people? Is it all down to professionalism and in speaking of this how does one reach a professional level?
